Optical fibre system for monitoring radius of curvature and breaks in optical fibres

The system includes a main optical fibre (3) to be monitored. This has a transparent cladding (2) and a cable cladding (1). In addition to the main fibre to be monitored, at least one monitor optical fibre (4) is provided in the cable cladding (1). The monitor fibre (4) runs parallel to the main fibre (3). The monitor fibre is connected to a transmitter/receiver system. The light beam transmitted through the main fibre (3) acts as a transmission system. If the main fibre (3) is broken or damaged, the transmission system crosses the light signal fed into the main fibre over into the monitor fibre (4). This is then detected by a receiver system provided on the monitor fibre.
