The seat (1) and backrest (2) positions can be altered to move the chair between a first (upright) position and a second (fully reclined) position. The seat is supported by at least one pivotable leg (4) on attached to its front side, to allow movement of the seat to alter the chair's angle of pitch. At least one pivoting rod system extending between the seat and backrest allows the latter to be pivoted relative to a fixed position in the seat. The seat is moved forwards from the chair's upright position towards the chair's fully reclined position. The rod system between the seat and backrest comprises two connector rods (10, 11) which are pivotably connected to each other at one end, whilst at the opposite end one of the rods is pivotably connected to the seat and the other is pivotably connected to the backrest. A control rod is (17) pivotably connected at one end to the common pivot point (9) between the two connector rods, and its opposite end is pivotably connected to the front leg. The control rod dimensions ensure that the angle between the seat and backrest does not change when the seat is initially moved forwards from the upright position, but will increase following further movement of the seat, until the chair is fully reclined. A similar chair is also claimed, including a support leg that forms part of or cooperates with the rod system between the seat and backrest. The leg has a swing arm that projects diagonally out from the pivot point between the support leg and seat. A fixture at the end of the arm engages with another fixture coupled to the seat once this seat has been moved a certain distance.
