The water meter (1) has a housing (2) containing a counter mechanism controlling a display (6) which can be viewed via a read-out window (8), each meter housing having an individual identification. The latter is provided by a component (30) which is secured to the meter housing to prevent its unauthorised removal. e.g. by fixing it to the screw ring (14) used to hold the read-out window in pressure-tight connection with the meter housing.
