The procedure for controlling a brake installation of a car involves a central control unit and several secondary control units undertaking the brake operation. The central unit outputs at least one set-point value for the brake control to the secondary units. Within the context of an initialisation phase, the central unit initialises the secondary units. When the supply voltage is switched on and with the secondary units not initialised, the central unit forms at least one set-point value dependent on the brake pedal activity by the driver and outputs these to the secondary units. For the initialisation, the central unit allocates addresses to the secondary units successively.
