The rack comprises a portion meshing with the steering spindle and a piston rod guided in a cylinder in the housing (1). Two chambers are formed by the rod and cylinder, and are supplied with hydraulic pressure via passages (2a, 2b) from a steering valve (3) adjacent to the spindle. These passages are contained almost entirely in the housing wall. They can be formed by tubes cast in the wall, or by slides moving during the casting operation, or by drillings sealed off from the outside. As a further alternative, pipes can be run directly along the wall and secured by holders, their ends being cast into the wall material. A vent passage (2c) can also be provided, running between folding bellows at the housing ends.
