The invention concerns a particle separator which can be used to separate denser, non-elongate particles from less dense, elongate particles. The separator (10) has a separator tray (14). A series of guides (22) extends in the tray from an upstream end towards a downstream end thereof. A level control arrangement (28, 30) maintains a generally constant level of liquid in the tray with the guides partially immersed in the liquid. There is a discharge opening (38) at the downstream end of the tray through which liquid discharges from the tray under gravity. Particles which are to be separated are introduced into the upstream end of the tray and are conveyed downstream therein in the liquid. Relatively dense particles gravitate in the liquid and are discharged from the tray through the discharge opening. Elongate and less dense particles are aligned by the guides and are carried over the discharge opening by the liquid. The denser particles are collected separately from the less dense and elongate particles. |
