摘要 PURPOSE:To directly and precisely recognize the position and the shape of a slab by controlling the movement of a grinding wheel on the basis of the recognized result, in which a distance from the predetermined position in the conveying perpendicular direction crossing with the conveying direction of the slab at right angles to the slab is measured over the whole circumference of the slab, for the purpose of preventing the grinding wheel from falling off. CONSTITUTION:Laser range finders 22, 24 are individually fixed in leg parts 18a, 18b of a gate-shaped carriage 18, and a distance in the conveying perpendicular direction (b) from each of the leg parts 18a, 18b of the gate-shaped carriage 18 to each of the circumferential end faces of a slab 14 is measured. On the basis of the result, in which the distances from the leg parts 18a, 18b to the slab 14 are continuously measured from both sides of the conveying perpendicular direction over the whole circumference of the slab 14, the position of the slab 14 and its plane shape on a conveying roller 12 are recognized, and according to this, the movement of the gate- shaped carriage 18 and the action of a grinder 20 are controlled. In this way, troubles such as a defect in the grinding wheel 16 because of falling off of the grinding wheel 16 from the slab 14 are prevented, and consequently, the surface of the slab 14 can be automatically ground safely.
