The pistons (3) and/or bearings (7,8) of the engine are lubricated with oil, where the temperature of the oil mixture leaving the pistons and/or bearing is measured, preferably directly after leaving, and monitored. The temperature of the oil mixture is measured relative to an almost constant surrounding temperature with a Peltier element (41). The oil mixture strikes one side of the Peltier element while its other side is at this almost constant temperature. Additionally, for oil mist monitoring, the pressure prevailing at the same time in the "driving chamber" of the engine is measured and monitored using a ventilation pipe (12).
