Process for investigating vehicle exhaust gases, comprises measuring the concentration (ratio) of gaseous components (Cx, Hy, CO, CO2, NOx, N2O, HCN, NH3, SO2, SO3) of an exhaust gas stream of the vehicle using IR spectroscopy, in which a polychromatic IR radiation is irradiated in an exhaust gas stream and a radiation is investigated by Fourier Transformation. The novelty is that the exhaust gas stream is irradiated with IR radiation unfiltered in a measuring chamber with heated walls and IR radiation irradiated in the wavelength region of an absorption spectrum of solid carbon, preferably amorphous carbon, and from a radiation appearing in the measuring chamber, the concentration ratios of gaseous components and solid carbon of the exhaust gas stream can be calculated. An apparatus for carrying out the above process is also claimed comprising a cuvette (3) acting as the measuring chamber whose walls are heated, an IR radiation emitting device (4) and an IR radiation receiving device (5).
