The workpiece is placed on the contact bearing face (5) formed by the upper surface of the guide rail (4). A sensor (10) is provided in the area of the contact bearing face with its active area detecting the workpiece (6). The sensor can be arranged directly beneath the bearing face or set entirely inside the guide rail. The contact bearing face has in the area of the sensor a layer (11) of electrically non-conductive material such as of ceramic or monocrystalline artificial diamond. The grinding machine has a grinding disc and the sensor can be arranged in the centre of the disc. The sensor can be formed inductive or acoustic.
