A cylindrical wound capacitor 20 of foils of e.g. aluminium or metallized dielectric wound with intervening dielectric in a staggered arrangement is compressed to flattened form and provided with leads 24, 26 disposed radially of the winding axis 22, and embedded in the end portions of the capacitor formed by the overlapping edges of the dielectric material; the leads being retained by ribs formed by heat and pressure and compressed into contact with the respective turns of the electrode foils or coatings. The leads may traverse the longer (Fig. 1) or the shorter (Fig. 6, not shown) dimension of the capacitor end surfaces, and emerge in opposite directions in a plane transverse to the winding axis; the short lead 24 being bent parallel to the axis at 36 and the long lead 26 being bent to lie obliquely to the axis in either sense; the ends of the leads being insertable and solderable in holes of a printed circuit board so as to impose a stress on the connection by deflection of the long lead inwardly or outwardly relative to the axis (Figs. 2, 3, not shown). The stress in the long lead urges the portion 30 thereof embedded in the outer end of the capacitor into firmer contact with the appropriate electrode layers particularly in temperature conditions affecting the plasticity of the dielectric. The capacitor end surface 29 sits flush on the printed surface board (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) and no part of the leads extends axially beyond the capacitor end surfaces save for the bent legs. Lead 36 may be upset into a kink engaging the appropriate printed circuit board holes to lock the capacitor against tilting or lifting pending soldering (Figs. 4, 5, not shown), or the lead may be knurled for the same purpose. The portions of the leads embedded in the capacitor ends may be zig-zag form (Fig. 9, not shown) or may be squared, flatted, knurled, or roughened (Figs. 10-15, not shown) where they areembedded in the capacitor ends to prevent rotation and consequent poor contact with the electrodes. The long and short leads may emerge from the end sections of the capacitor in which they are embedded at right angles to each other (Figs. 7A, 7B, not shown).
