The apparatus for controlling parameters of a laser welding process includes a camera (20), in particular, a CCD camera which serves for detection of the geometry of melt bath (10) produced by the welding process, and is connected to an image processing unit (28). The apparatus is characterised by the fact that control of the penetration depth takes place dependent on the detected length (l) or the area of the melt bath.
