<p>Print quality in shuttle-type printers is monitored by providing a printhead (40) with an optical sensor (50) which optically senses a recording media (14) to establish a background reflective level, moving the printhead to a location of a selected second optical density to establish a foreground reflective level, printing images on the media, and optically sensing the images and comparing with the background and foreground levels to detect any changes in reflectance levels of the sensed images indicating changes in print quality. <IMAGE></p> |
