A machine tool comprises a horizontal girder 4, a beam 12 extending along the girder and adjustable means 14, 15, 16 interconnecting them for compensating the lowering of the girder caused by bending thereof. Tool posts 7 are fed by a screw 8 along the girder supported on columns 2, 3 in a vertical lathe. The means 14, 15, 16 consist of plates of different thicknesses, the centre one being the thinnest to stress the girder upwardly. In a modification, the columns 2, 3, Fig. 4 (not shown), are mounted on a rotary table within an annular workpiece 11. A screw 26 is provided intermediate the adjusting plates. In a further modification, the beam 31, Fig. 6 (not shown), passes within the girder and is connected thereto by screws 32, 33, 34. There may be only one interconnecting means and it may compensate for temperature changes. |
