PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low-viscosity smectic liquid crystal composition, having a sufficiently negatively largeΔεsuitable for (τ-Vmin ) and good orienting properties, excellent in high-speed responsiveness and useful for liquid crystal display elements, etc., by including a specific liquid crystalline compound, etc., therein. SOLUTION: This smectic liquid crystal composition comprises (A) preferably 10-60 wt.% compound represented by formula I (R<1> is a 1-12C alkyl or a 1-12C alkoxy; R<2> is a 1-12C alkyl), (B) preferably 30-70 wt.% compound represented by formula II (R<3> and R<4> are each a 1-9C alkyl; ring A is a benzene ring or a cyclohexane ring), (C) preferably 5-40 wt.% compound represented by formula III (R<5> and R<6> are each a 1-18C alkyl or a 1-18C alkoxy; X is H or F) and further preferably (D) preferably 5-40 wt.% compound represented by formula IV (R<7> and R<8> are each a 1-18C alkyl).
