PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode which allows the control and application of protein at a nanometer level by coating the surface of an electrode substrate with lipids and protein in the state of substantially a monomolecular film, thereby coating and fixing the electrode surface with the protein in the state of the protein having functions. SOLUTION: The electrode is formed by coating the electrode substrate 1 with the lipids 2 in the state of the monomolecular film and further coating the substrate with the protein 3 in the state of having orientability between the lipids 2. The protein 3 is preferably heme protein, more particularly preferably cytochrome c3 . This protein has high stability to temp., has heat resistance up to 121 deg.C, allows the direct transfer and receipt of electrons to and from the electrode, has the oxidation reduction potential on a high energy size and has a high capacity to reduce other substances. Phospholipids and more particularly phosphatidylcholine, etc., are preferable as the lipids 2 for their intensity of the hydrophobic property to retain the protein, the intensity of the hydrophilic property to stably modify the potential, and the ease of handling.
