PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing high-purity 3-methyltetrahydrofuran in an easy process. SOLUTION: This method for producing 3-methyltetrahydrofuran comprises a step 1 for carrying out the hydrogenation and dealcoholizating cyclization of a compound represented by the formula ROOC-CH(CH3 )-CH2 -CHO [R denotes a 1-3C alkyl group and the formyl group can be present as an acetal having a 1-8C alkanol] and synthesizing 2-methyl-2-γ-butyrolactone, a step 2 for separating the 2-methyl-γ-butyrolactone and alcohols produced in the step 1 and a step 3 for conducting a hydrogenating reaction using the 2-methyl-γ-butyrolactone without containing the alcohols obtained in the step 2.
