A fixed length coding system for digital image compression is used to deliver a fixed amount of compression for a monochrome or colour image of a given size regardless of the contents of the image, while retaining good quality picture reproduction. The compression system used is a lossy system since only predetermined and significant pixel values are retained and intermediate values are discarded during the encoding process. In the decoding or decompression process the significant retained pixel values are restored to their original locations and the discarded intermediate pixel values are rebuilt using a process of dithering of pixel values. The process yields good results in the form of speed of execution , amount of image compression achieved and image quality. A built in quality factor can be used to increase picture quality at the loss of compression and vice versa. |
