The fitting 10, comprising a hollow, tubular body of outer diameter of substantially the same as the outer diameter of a pipe and inner diameter greater than the inner diameter of the pipe and having an inner wall comprising a fusible thermoplastic polymeric material with a heating element 12 wholly or partly embedded in it, has the end 21 of the pipe 20, prepared by removing a section of the outer wall of the pipe along a length thereof adjacent the pipe end sufficient to accommodate the fitting, inserted in it. The heating element 12 is energised so as to fuse the thermoplastic polymeric material and form a fusion joint between the pipe 20 and the fitting 10. The fitting 10 has a smoothly contoured end 19 of increasing diameter with a like element contour, matched by the pipe outer surface. Alternatively, the fitting 10 has its inner diameter matching the corresponding fitting and pipe end contours, the fitting locating within the pipe end. |
