An electromagnetic brake (EMBR) for applying at least one static or periodic low-frequency magnetic field to a smelt inside a crucible used for (semi-)continuous casting, comprises at least one electromagnet consisting of a magnetic core (11) with sections that can be moved in an axial direction, and an electric coil (12) around the core. The brake is mounted in a framework (13) that contains position-fixing devices (15) which include components for altering and fixing the relative position between the coil and core in their vertical directions. An apparatus for (semi-)continuous casting of elongated metal goods is also claimed, comprising a cooled crucible constructed from a casting mould, support beams for the mould, and cooling devices used to cool the crucible and beams, as well as to supply coolant for cooling the smelt during casting, in addition to the above brake. |
