PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a face direction accurately from the figure image of a camera by obtaining a center position between the positions of the respective maximum values on the basis of position information of the maximum value of each feature area. SOLUTION: An angle detecting means 16B has a storage element such as an RAM or ROM stored with the relation between a center distance signal S16A and a face direction, and outputs a face direction signal Sout obtained on the basis of the center distance signal S16A. A direction computing means 16 is provided with a center distance computing means 16A composed of a difference computing means, an absolute value means, a multiplying means, a square computing means and dividing means, and the angle detecting means 16B, and outputs a normalized center distance signal S16A, obtained by normalizing center distance between the center position of a feature and the center position of a face area by the square of the product of the major axis radius d1 and minor axis radius d2 of an ellipse approximate to the face area, to the angle detecting means 16B. A face direction can therefore be detected accurately from the figure image of a camera by a small-scaled circuit. |
