PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the image recording device in which a recording material such as toner is saved inexpensively and effectively while improving a character recognition rate with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: A recording image processing section of a facsimile equipment gives recorded image data to a direct memory access (DMA) port 21, from which 3×3 matrix data are obtained and given to an algorithm block 22. The block 22 uses a matrix to extract an edge part and other parts than the edge and applies smoothing processing to the edge part and provides an output of the result to a data conversion section 23. The data conversion section 23 sets density to the edge part and the other parts than the edge part depending on whether the recording mode is a conventional mode or a toner saving recording mode and provides an output of the result to a PWM conversion section 24, where PWM modulation is applied to image data whose density is set and the result is outputted to a recording section. The recording section records an image on recording paper based on the image data subject to PWM modulation.
