A process for the catalytic conversion of unbranched or "sparsely branched" olefines into saturated hydrocarbons having a branched or more highly branched carbon chain, comprises contacting a starting material containing at least one such olefin at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing gas with a catalyst which has been prepared by depositing nickel and tungsten on an acid-acting support and converting the nickel and tungsten at least in part to the corresponding sulphides. Sparsely branched means that the number of branches per molecule does not exceed 2C-7/3 where C is the number of carbon atoms per molecule. By such a process normal olefins are converted to isoparaffins, e.g. hexene-1 to isohexane. Acid-acting supports mentioned are SiO2, ZrO2, B2O3, Al2O3, and mixtures.
