A steering column gear shift mechanism is provided with means preventing unintentional engagement of reverse. As shown a tubular shift bar 10 is axially slidable to select a ratio and rotated to establish it by a manual gear lever 13 having a slot 17 slidably engaging a bolt 16 of a casing 12 fast with the bar 10. The gear lever 13 has a flattened ball 20 slidably engaged in a bore of a guide pin 18 which is axially fixed but rotatably mounted in a stationary housing 29. The lever 13 is pivoted in the plane of the drawing to select a ratio, for the forward ratios an enlarged head 22 of a locking pin 21 slides in an axial slot 23 (Fig. 3, not shown) of the shift bar 10, the lever being prevented from moving to its reverse position by a slot (24) which is too narrow for the head 22. Reverse is obtainable on moving the lever 13 longitudinally against the pressure of a spring 26 to bring the shank of the pin 21 into register with the slot (24). The slots 23, (24) may also be provided on a part 27 of the casing 12, the lever 13 being shaped appropriately. |
