PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always allow a cut end face to obtain an excellent surface (mirror surface) and reduce a splice-loss value when spliced. SOLUTION: A small cut is given on a part of a peripheral surface of an optical fiber of an approximately 125μm outer diameter, for example, a quartz glass fiber, and then the optical fiber is held on both sides of the cut and one of the holding parts or both of them are moved so that only a tensile stress is acted on the optical fiber, and the tensile strength applied to the optical fiber is made to not exceeding 0.23 kgf at the time of cutting off. Thus, 100% mirror surface generation frequency is obtainable. |
