Method and apparatus for purifying internal combustion engine exhaust gases

A combustion apparatus (2) such as an internal combustion engine is connected to a closed vessel (3). A vacuum pump or fan (7) generates a negative pressure in said vessel (3). Exhaust gases from engine (2) expand into vessel (3) and flow through fan (7) into exhaust pipe (8) and silencer (9). An additional oxidising agent such as air is provided from means (11) and is also sucked into vessel (3) to mix with the exhaust gases. Turbulence generator means (12) may be fitted to enhance said mixing.
