摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actualize a picture quality of clear colors which is based upon white and red and close to that of a CRT at a wide field angle by providing at least one specific phase plate between a display element which has a counter substrate, a specific pixel substrate and a specific liquid crystal layer and a polarizer. SOLUTION: This device has a liquid crystal display element 5, phase difference plates 2a and 2b arranged on both its sides, and a couple of polarizing plates 3 and 4 between which they are sandwiched. A glass substrate 7 used as a pixel substrate includes an inter-layer insulating film 40 of which the transmissivity to light of peak wavelength is improved more to approximately >=95%. The liquid crystal layer 12 is formed of liquid crystal which is set so that the difference Δn(450)-Δn(650) between refractive index anisotropy Δn(450) to light of 450 nm in wavelength and refractive index anisotropy Δn(650) to light of 650 nm is 0 to 0.01. The whole phase difference plate 2a totally has relation na=nc>nb on the average, where na, nb, and nc are three main refractive indexes of a refractive index elliptic body.
