<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the display quality and productivity of LCD by preventing an orientation defect caused nearby a columnar spacer of LCD whose gap is held uniform by columnar spacers. SOLUTION: After a counter substrate 13 which has columnar spacers is rubbed for the 1st time in a direction R1 parallel to signal lines 32, a 2nd rubbing process is carried out in a direction R1 parallel to scanning lines 18 to obtain uniform alignment in the composite direction (f) of both the directions without being affected by the columnar spacers. Further, the opposite substrate 13 is rubbed in a direction R3 to restrict the direction of liquid crystal molecules and then a rubbing process is performed in a direction R4 which is 180 deg. different form the said direction to restrict the pretilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules, thereby obtaining uniform alignment over the entire area including areas wherein the shadows of the columnar spacer formed at the time of the alignment.</p> |
