The system detects so-called "Ghost Riders", who have entered a one-way system or motorway carriageway from the wrong direction. Detectors set into, or alongside, the roadway detect the direction of travel of every vehicle. The detectors may be piezoelectric pressure sensors set into the ground or may be induction loop detectors which sense the metal mass of the vehicle. The sensor outputs are fed to a central control station. If the vehicle is moving in the wrong direction, flashing lights and/or illuminated text messages are activated to warn the offending driver and other road users of the situation. The system can also trigger digital cameras to make images of the vehicle for prosecution evidence.
