An apparatus for moving a belt, in particular for moving a conveyor belt in a system for dewatering a web of material, such as a screen belt or a felt belt. The apparatus has a plurality of support rollers and deflection rollers, by way of which the endless belt is deflected to form a closed loop. A device is provided for adjusting at least one of the deflection rollers in the longitudinal direction of the belt, whereby the tension of the belt can be set, and a device for controlling the direction of motion of the belt. Each bearing of the deflection roller which is adjustable in the longitudinal direction of the belt is assigned its own control device, by which the two bearings of the deflection roller are adjustable to different extents or in different directions, as a result of which the direction of motion of the belt is also controllable by means of the deflection roller.
