摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an alignment layer having a high degree of liquid crystal aligning force by arranging a rod subjected to an orientation treatment on its surface apart a spacing from a substrate, holding a liquid crystalline material in the spacing between the substrate and the rod and moving the substrate relatively in one direction, thereby imparting an orientation function thereto. SOLUTION: An aligned metallic rod is so fixed that the distance between the rod and the substrate attains, for example, 0.2 mm. The liquid crystal material is filled between the substrate surface and the metallic rod and the substrate is moved from this state in one direction at a moving speed of about 4 mm/min. The liquid crystal material automatically follows up the movement in such a manner that the material is held at all times during the movement. The substrate treated in such a manner is rested for about 24 hours in a clean vessel and the liquid crystals sticking the surface are washed with isopropyl alcohol. Two sheets of the substrates treated in such a manner are so arranged (counter parallel) that the moving direction at the time of the treatment is reversed. The substrates are superposed on each other via spacers in order to maintain the specified cell thickness. The guest- host(GH) liquid crystals prepd. by adding dyestuffs to the liquid crystal material are injected. As a result, the uniform alignment is obtd.
