The lower end of the tool is cylindrical (2) and has a diametric tapering split (6) from its bottom end. The central part of the split is hollowed out to fit the sensor body. At the lower ends (3) of the tool are curved blades (5), which will cut into the soil. As the tool is pressed into the earth, displaced soil is pushed out sideways by the edges (7) of the split.
