PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the substrate with excellent surface smoothness and the display element with both superior optical characteristics and display quality by making the surfaces of adjacent overlap parts higher or as high as the surface of a colored layer part other than the overlap parts. SOLUTION: This element is equipped with the color filter substrate where the edge parts of adjacent colored layers 4 corresponding to pixels of R, G, and B are overlaped with each other on a light shield member 3. The edge parts of the colored layers 4 form a projection part at their overlap part and an overcoat layer 5 on it flows in the center part C of the pixel from the projection part of the colored layer 4 to form a projection part on the projection part of the colored layer 4, so that the surface is made smooth in a liquid crystal illumination display area (b). To form no recessed part on the surface of the overlap part (pixel edge part), the overlap width of the colored layers 4 is preferably >=2 μm and the overlap part is shielded from light by a black mask 3 by providing a light shield member 3 (black mask) overlapping with the overlap part of the colored layers 4. At this time, the width of the overlap part is preferably not more than the width of the black mask 3. |
