PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device high in luminance and low in cost. SOLUTION: This projection type display device has a lighting optical system 1, a liquid crystal panel part 2 including a microlens part 15 and a liquid crystal cell 16, and a projection optical system 3. The microlens part 15 is equipped with a lens support part 151 which has a refractive index n1 in a 1st polarizing direction 152 an a refractive index n2 in a 2nd polarizing direction 153 crossing the 1st polarizing direction at right angles and a lens part 154 having a refractive index n2 in all directions. This projection type display device makes a polarized light beam, which is parallel to the 1st polarizing direction 152, incident on the microlens part 15 from the lighting optical system 1, reflects the beam by the liquid crystal cell 16 by rotating the plane of polarization by 90 deg., and retransmits the polarized light beam which is parallel to the 2nd polarizing direction 153 through the microlens part 15. |
