PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an image, without allowing linear uneveness to appear on a reduced image. SOLUTION: A reduction ratio is n/m (n, m are positive integers satisfying n<m), P(s) is the density data of each pixel in one pixel string of an original image, Q(t) is the density data of each pixel in one pixel string of a reduced image, s(t) is the number of reference pixels in the original image at the time of calculating the Q(t), s(1) is the number of leading pixels in the processing range of one pixel string in the original image, and (b) is the load quantity of P(s(t)). The s(t) for the Q(t) is determined, based on an operational expression s(t)=s(1)+int[(m×(t-1))/n], the load of P(s(t)) is set up unconditionally to b/m, the load of an adjacent pixel after the s(t)-th order is determined, so that total of load amounts from reference pixels becomes m/m, and respective Q(t) (Q(1), Q(2),...) are obtained by a method for setting up the load calculation total of respective pixels to Q(t) for reducing the image of one pixel string of the original image.
