PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and surely detect a pinned direction by obtaining theρ-H loop characteristic of a spin bulb magneto-resistance MR element from the detected output voltage in the condition in which an alternating magnetic field is applied in the magnetization direction of a pinned layer. SOLUTION: When the polarization of the inclination of an expectedρ-H loop is set as positive, a prescribed sense current is applied to the spin bulb MR element of a bar 44 on a table 43a through a probe pin 45 from a constant current source 50. Then, the driving current having a prescribed frequency is supplied to a coil 40 from a Helmholtz power supply 41 and the magnetic field being generated is applied in the longitudinal axis direction of the bar 44. At that time, the waveforms of the output voltage of the spin bulb MR element, i.e., theρ-H loop are taken in for a number of times at a prescribed time interval, A/D converted and recorded as data. Then, a control computer 42 computes the positive or the negative of the inclination of the loop and the number of waveform data are counted for a positive and a negative. If the number of positive inclinations is larger than the negative, the pinned direction is discriminated as normal.
