A stack 15 or 16, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), of pallets is placed in a pallet magazine 10 on a pallet magazine conveyer 14 in its upper (dashed line) position. Side walls 65, Fig. 6 (not shown), are manually adjusted previously so as to centralize the stack. If a stack 15 of skidstack (i.e. of fibre board form) pallets is used the conveyer 14 is lowered (full line) and actuated in unison with a-storage station conveyer 17 to feed the whole stack 15 into a storage station 11, whereupon :a further stack 15 of pallets may be placed in the.magazine 10. As each pallet is required in a further station 12, Fig. 1 (not shown), for loading, suction heads 29 on a transfer frame 19 are lowered to contact and then support the uppermost pallet, the frame 19 being then transferred to the further station 12, by movement on rollers 20 along horizontal guide channels 21 under the action of a ram 23 whereupon the pallet is deposited on a loading conveyer 22 in its lowermost (full line) position. If non-skidstack pallets 16 are used the conveyer 14 is lowered from its upper (dashed line) position during which lowering holding means 50 (adjustable for different sizes of pallets) are actuated to effect engaging contact with the lowest pallet but one to support it and the pallets above it. When fully lowered the conveyer 14 is actuated in unison with the conveyer 17 to feed the lowest pallet to the storage station 11. The conveyer 14 is elevated once more to contact the held pallet, the holding means 50 released and again, as above, re-actuated to grip and support the lowest pallet but one. When a pallet is required in the further station 12 the conveyers 14, 17, 22 are activated in unison to pass the pallet in the storage station 11 on to the (lowered) conveyer 22 and the pallet on conveyer 14 on to the conveyer 17. Whichever form of pallet is used it is carried on the conveyer 22 to the latter's uppermost (dashed line) position. As soon as an operator has assembled a layer of articles to be loaded on a loading platform 40 a stripping plate 41 is protracted, a stop bar 44 is operated and said layer is carried by rollers (not shown) on to the plate 41. The operator proceeds to assemble a further layer when the plate 41 is withdrawn and the articles slide over an apex plate 43 to be deposited gently on the pallet. The conveyer 22 is lowered slightly after each layer is deposited so that a stack of the requisite number of layers is built up. Thereupon the conveyer 22 is fully lowered (full line) andactuated to pass the pallet and stack of articles on to a delivery conveyer 37. A fresh pallet is simultaneously fed on to the conveyer 22 by either the suction transfer frame 19 or the storage conveyer 17 according to the form of pallet being handled.
