PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium highly dispersed with polishing material particles having high dispersibility and excellent electric conversion characteristics and traveling durability. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is produced by kneading a kneaded mixture, which is formed by kneading 5 to 100 pts.wt. binder resin contg. functional groups with 100 pts.wt. polishing material particles having an average particle size of 0.05 to 0.50μm without adding a solvent thereto or moldings which are formed by molding this kneaded mixture, with at least either of magnetic powder or nonmagnetic powder together with carbon black and the binder resin, then dispersing the mixture or kneading one kind of at least either of the magnetic powder or the nonmagnetic powder together with the carbon black and the binder resin after dissolving the kneaded mixture or the moldings, then dissolving this mixture into a dispersed dispersion, thereby preparing a coating liquid for forming the magnetic layer.
