PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device to perform normal starting operation of a discharge lamp even when the discharge lamp is attached and detached in a modulated light state. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device includes an inverter for turning on a discharge lamp, and also includes capacitor circuits 12 and 13 for determining an ON period of an inverter switching element 4 attached to the inverter and for determining a light output level of a discharge lamp 10. In addition, the discharge lamp lighting device includes a modulated light command switch 30 for switching from a full light state of the light output level to a modulated light state. A light modulation delay circuit 91 is provided so that a modulated light signal from the modulated light command switch 30 is neglected for a starting period of the discharge lamp 10, and then set to a modulated light state. When the light modulation delay circuit 91 is set to a modulated light state, a switching means 93 is provided for effecting switching of capacitor circuits 12 and 13 to a modulated light connection state. A drive power source terminal A of the light modulation delay circuit 91 is connected to a drive power source 1 through an electrode filament 10a of the discharge lamp 10. This resets the light modulation delay circuit 91 when replacing the discharge lamp 10. |
