The engine has a cylinder head (42) for each cylinder (50) which has a combustion chamber (10), first and second air inlet valves (20,22), an exhaust valve and a spark plug. The second inlet valve (22) is situated in a cylinder head cavity (11), offset relative to the axis of the cylinder, which contains the fuel injector. The exhaust valve is situated away from the cavity, and the spark plug is located in the centre of it adjacent to the injector. The axes of the three valves are inclined relative to the axis of the cylinder, and the diameter of the second inlet valve is smaller than that of the first inlet valve. The two air inlet valves are connected to branches of the same main inlet duct.
