ANTIFERROELECTRIC LIQUID CRYSTAL DEVICE AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING THE SAME

An antiferroelectric liquid crystal display wherein the display screen does not become unequal even when the power supply is turned off and no voltage is applied and which has a high display quality. The direction intermediate between the direction of the mean molecular axis of the liquid crystal panel in a right-hand antiferroelectric state and the direction of the mean molecular axis in a left-hand antiferroelectric state is presumed to be the direction of the intrinsic antiferroelectric axis and the direction of axis of polarization of a polarizing element is aligned with the direction of the intrinsic antiferroelectric axis, thus decreasing the difference in luminance between the right-hand antiferroelectric state and the left-hand antiferroelectric state.
