The use, at room temperature, of water-soluble and water-swellable alkyl-glycoside compounds with ether-containing or free-hydroxy groups in the alkyl residue ((AO)x-alkyl-glycosides) of formula: (AO)xRO(G)n (I) (where: A = H or alkyl; R = hydrocarbyl of multivalent alcohol; G = glycose unit; x, n /- 1), as a component of the aqueous phase of mud systems, especially in water-based drilling fluids, and/or in water-based systems for treating earth formations.
