A detergent composition consists of nonyl pnenyl + 10 ethylene oxide condensate, tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, carboxymethyl cellulose, KOH and water and, as U.V. stabilizer, the p-hydroxyphenyl ester of a -cyano-b ,b -bis-(2-thienyl) acrylic acid which has been oxyalkylated with 12 moles of ethylene oxide.ALSO:An aqueous latex of acrylonitrile-butadiene containing 5%, by weight, of a -cyano-b -bis (5-methyl-2-thienyl) acrylamide, which gives protection against ultraviolet radiations, and 5%, by weight, of a formaldehyde naphthalene-2-sodium sulphonate, which functions as a dispersing agent, is sprayed on to leather to form a film, which is dried.ALSO:Organic compounds susceptible to U.V. radiation, such as polyesters, polyethylene, epoxy and melamine plastics, are protected against degradation by such radiation by incorporating therein a compound, free of nitro groups, of the formula where (Ar)1 and (Ar)2 are aromatic carboxylic nuclei or heterocyclic nuclei containing at least one pair of conjugated double bonds, and at least one of which is heterocyclic; n is 1 or 2; X is -COO- or -CONR-; R is hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl or aryl, or R and Y together make up a heterocyclic ring when n is 1; or Y is hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl or aryl when n is 1, or Y is a bivalent radical when n is 2 (see Division C2). In examples (1) and (2) a stabilizer as above is dissolved in a mixture of nitrocellulose, alkyd resin and dibutyl phthalate, then butyl acetate, butanol and toluene are added, and a film is prepared; (3) a stabilizer is incorporated in a polyethylene wax; (4) a stabilizer is incorporated in an acrylonitrilebutadiene latex; (6) a P.V.C. sponge prepared from P.V.C., di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, bariumcadmium stabilizer and p,p1-oxybis(benzenesulphonyl hydrazide) is impregnated with an ethylene glycol monomethyl ether solution of a U.V. stabilizer and the sponge is squeezed and dried; (9) powdered nylon 66 is mixed with 1% of a stabilizer. Compounds of the above formula which contain reactive hydrogen may be oxyalkylated with 1-200 moles of oxyalkylating agent, e.g. ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, isobutylene oxide, glycidol, epichlorohydrin, butadiene dioxide and styrene oxide; thus the p-hydroxyphenyl ester of a -cyano-b ,b -bis (2-thionyl) acrylic acid is reacted with 12 moles of ethylene oxide.ALSO:Compounds (free of nitro groups) of the formula where (Ar)1 and (Ar)2 are aromatic carbocyclic nuclei or heterocyclic nuclei containing at least one pair of conjugated double bonds, and at least one is heterocyclic; n is 1 or 2; X is -COO- or -CONR-; R is hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl or aryl, or R and Y together make up a ring when n is 1; or Y is hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl or aryl when n is 1, or a bivalent radical when n is 2; are prepared by condensing (Ar)1-CO-(Ar)2 with (NCCH2X)n Y The compounds as defined above are claimed as novel, except when simultaneously X is -CONH- and Y is H. The radicals (Ar)1 and (Ar)2 may be substituted.
