The drive unit (10) is installed on a concrete plinth (8) which protrudes into the lift shaft (3) and is level with and in one piece with the storey floor (9) of the uppermost stopping point of the lift. The plinth is located above the path of movement of the counterweight (6), the uppermost position of which, with the lift loaded, ends with a safety distance below the plinth. The haulage cables of the counterweight pass through holes (16) in the plinth.
