The invention relates to a method for producing aromatic aldehydes from specially structured phenone ketals. First, the phenone ketal is added to a vinyl ether in the presence of Lewis acid catalysts. The acetal arising therefrom is subjected to acid hydrolysis to form a corresponding alpha , beta -unsaturated aldehyde. Preferably, the C=C double bond of said aldehyde is selectively hydrogenated in the normal manner.
