Electromagnetically operated engine gas changeover valve

The internal combustion engine cylinder inlet or outlet valve has a single switched electromagnet coil with opposing pole faces and a pair of spring-loaded armatures on the valve stem representing the open and closed positions of the valve head. From one position the valve stem is urged towards the other position, when the electromagnetic control circuit is interrupted, by the action of a compression spring, and held in the second position by re-energisation of the magnet. The valve head (3) opens or closes against a valve seat (4) in the cylinder (5) of an internal combustion engine. Armatures (14,15) on the valve stem (2) are arranged to contact the pole faces (10a,10b,11a,11b) to form the open and closed positions of the valve respectively and compression springs (20) provide a balancing position when the electromagnetic coil (9) is de-energised by the control circuit (12,13). When the control circuit is interrupted the armature in contact with a pole face is released and the spring urges the valve stem through the intermediate position and re- energisation of the coil holds the valve stem in the other position.
