Inter alia HCN is made by ammoxidation of methyl or ethyl formate or acetate, formaldehyde or acetaldehyde, acetone or methyl ethyl ketone in the presence of specially prepared V and Sn oxides having a surface area of 50-500 sq. m./gm.ALSO:Specially prepared catalysts having a surface area of 50-500 sq. m/gm. and containing vanadium and tin oxides are used in oxidizing ketones, aldehydes, esters, toluene, xylenes or olefins having 3 or 4 C with oxygen, ammonia and optionally steam to the corresponding nitrile. Reference is made to the production of benzonitrile (ex toluene), terephthalic dinitrile (ex p-xylene) and acrylonitrile (ex propylene). Acetonitrile from methyl or ethyl acetate, acetaldehyde acetone and methylethyl ketone is also described.ALSO:V and Su oxide catalists having a specific surface area of 50 to 500 sq. in/gm. are made by dissolving Su in 10-40% HNO3 at all temperature not exceeding 20 DEG C., adding the resulting clear solution to an aqueous celloidal Hi SiO3 sel containing 8-20% Si O2 and NH4VO3 (optionally also H3PO4), homogenising the resulting suspension and treating with aqueous NH3 at 80-95 DEG C., for 0.5-10 hours, drying and calcining at 400-800 DEG C., and ultimately treating at 110-500 DEG C., per 1-50 hours with steam, gaseous ammonia and optionally air. Other elements which may be present are Ba, Al, Ti, W, Sb, Cr and Pb. Comparative examples are given. |
