摘要 Resin compositions comprise an aldehyde modified carboxylic acid amide interpolymer of a polymerizable unsaturated carboxylic acid amide and at least one other monomer containing a CH2=C< group, said interpolymer having amido hydrogen atoms replaced by the structure <FORM:0982607/C3/1> where R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical and R1 is the residue of a monohydric alcohol in at least 50% of said structures, and a cellulose ether, said cellulose being etherified by hydroxyethyl or alkyl radicals having two to eight carbon atoms to an extent sufficient to impart solubility in hydrocarbon solvents but not to prevent substantial compatibility with the other resinous components of the compositions. The interpolymer may be derived from acrylamide, methacrylamide, itaconic acid diamide, ethacrylamide, crotonamide, fumaric acid diamide, maleic acid diamide, maleuric acid and esters thereof and N-carbamyl maleimide, and olefinic hydrocarbons and halogen-substituted hydrocarbons, unsaturated esters, unsaturated acids and unsaturated nitriles. Interpolymerization may be effected in the presence of catalysts, e.g. acetyl benzoyl peroxide, and the interpolymer reacted with formaldehyde, sources thereof such as paraformaldehyde, trioxymethylene or hexamethylene tetramine, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde or furfural, in the presence of alcohols such as butanol and catalysts such as oxalic, hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. Alternatively the amides may be reacted with the aldehydes before interpolymerization. The compositions of the invention may also comprise pigments, fillers, solvents and higher alcohols, e.g. isooctyl alcohol, and may be used for flow coating. Examples describe (A) the interpolymerization of acrylamide, styrene and methacrylic acid in butanol and aromatic naphtha in the presence of cumene hydroperoxide and tert.-dodecyl mercaptan and the reaction of the product with formaldehyde in the presence of butanol, and coating compositions comprising interpolymer (A), aromatic naphtha, xylene, silicone oil, titanium dioxide and (I) polyethylene, methoxyethyl acetate, maleic modified styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer, trimethylol propane, magnesium silicate, ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, isooctyl alcohol and diethylene glycol butyl ether; (II) zinc octoate, isophorone, ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, isooctyl alcohol and diethylene glycol butyl ether; and (IV) polyethylene, methoxyethyl acetate, maleic modified styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer, trimethylol propane, magnesium silicate, butanol and ethyl cellulose or ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose. Specifications 826,652, 917,881 and 920,810 are referred to.ALSO:Substrates, e.g. of metal, are coated with compositions comprising an aldehyde modified carboxylic acid amide interpolymer of a polymerizable unsaturated carboxylic acid amide and at least one monomer containing a <FORM:0982607/B1-B2/1> group, said interpolymer having amido hydrogen atoms replaced by the structure <FORM:0982607/B1-B2/2> where R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical and R1 is the residue of a monohydric alcohol in at least 50% of said structures, and a cellulose ether, said cellulose being etherified by hydroxyethyl or alkyl radicals having 2-8 carbon atoms to an extent sufficient to impart solubility in hydrocarbon solvents but not to prevent substantial compatibility with the other resinous components of the compositions. The preferred amide is acrylamide, and specified comonomers are olefinic hydrocarbons, halogen substitution products thereof, unsaturated esters, unsaturated acids and unsaturated nitriles. The interpolymers may be reacted with formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, trioxymethylene, hexamethylene tetramine, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde or furfural in the presence of butanol. The compositions may also comprise pigments, fillers, solvents and higher alcohols, e.g. isooctyl alcohol. Examples describe the coating of phosphatized steel panels with compositions comprising an interpolymer of acrylamide, styrene and methacrylic acid modified with formaldehyde and butanol, aromatic naphtha, xylene, silicone oil, titanium dioxide and (I) polyethylene, methoxyethyl acetate, maleic modified styrene/allyl alcohol copolymer, trimethylol propane, magnesium silicate, ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, isooctyl alcohol, and diethylene glycol butyl ether; (II) zinc octoate, isophorone, ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, isooctyl alcohol and diethylene glycol butyl ether; and (III) polyethylene, methoxyethyl acetate, maleic modified styrene/allyl alcohol copolymer, trimethylol propane, magnesium silicate, butanol, and ethyl cellulose or ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose.
