A vehicle 10 is disclosed which includes a parallel hybrid powertrain 14, 16, 18, 20. The vehicle 10 can be left with the engine 16 not running and the motor 18 connected to the transmission. For a rapid pull-away, a user merely has to depress an accelerator device and a vehicle management unit (VMU) 22 controls the motor 18 to provide a tractive torque TTT to a final drive axle 14 and, at substantially the same time, the motor 18 is arranged to crank the engine 16. The VMU 22 brings the engine 16 into an operating condition, synchronises the engine 16 with the motor 18 and causes the engine 16 to take over the provision of all, most or at least part of the provision of tractive torque from the motor 18. In this manner, the vehicle 10 can make a rapid pull-away without having to wait for the engine 16 to be brought into operation. |
