Leak detector using a tracer gas

The detector has at least one gas analyser (1), such as a mass spectrometer, which is connected through a secondary pump (2), a buffer storage tank (14), a first conduit (4) and a valve (5) to a primary pump (3). The entry (6) to the detector is connected to an enclosure and is also connected to the primary pump through a second conduit (7) between the primary pump and the first valve. Two valves (8,10) are located in the entry connections to the primary pump and the analyser. There is a direct connection (12) between a sampling element (11) in the primary pump conduit and the analyser. The sampling element has a very low conductance such that the analyser is able to work even though the conduit that it is attached to may be at a pressure above 10 mbar.
